7. The Colosseum, Rome

The Colosseum, an iconic symbol of ancient Rome, was constructed on the site of a drained artificial lake, part of Emperor Nero’s opulent palace complex. This grand amphitheater was commissioned by Nero’s successors to reclaim the land for public use. Inaugurated in 80 AD, it became the stage for brutal gladiatorial contests and other public spectacles that often ended in death. These games were meant to entertain the masses and demonstrate the power of the Roman Empire. While today it stands as a monument to architectural and engineering prowess, the Colosseum’s dark past is etched in its stones. Learn more about the Colosseum.
