10. Suffered Heavy Losses
The 1st Rhode Island Regiment sustained significant casualties, particularly at the Battle of Pine’s Bridge on May 14, 1781. In this engagement, Loyalist forces under Colonel James DeLancey surprised the regiment’s position, resulting in the deaths of Colonel Christopher Greene, Major Ebenezer Flagg, and at least six African American soldiers, with two more later succumbing to their wounds. The regiment also reported at least five wounded and thirty-three captured. This battle was one of the bloodiest small-unit actions of the war, reflecting both the intensity of their combat roles and their steadfastness in dangerous situations.
