11. Iran vs. United States
In 1979, Iran’s Islamic Revolution ousted the U.S.-backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, leading to the establishment of the Islamic Republic under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The revolution significantly strained U.S.-Iran relations, culminating in the Iran hostage crisis. On November 4, 1979, Iranian militants stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 66 Americans hostage. Fifty-two of them were held for 444 days, demanding the extradition of the Shah, who had sought asylum in the U.S. for medical treatment. The hostages were released on January 20, 1981, coinciding with Ronald Reagan’s inauguration. This prolonged crisis not only deepened the animosity between the two nations but also had lasting effects on Middle Eastern geopolitics. (britannica.com)
