6. Cuba vs. United States
The Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 marked a significant U.S. foreign policy failure in Cuba.

In April 1961, the United States orchestrated the Bay of Pigs invasion, aiming to overthrow Fidel Castro’s government in Cuba. Approximately 1,500 Cuban exiles, trained and equipped by the CIA, landed at the Bay of Pigs on Cuba’s southern coast. However, the operation faced immediate setbacks: the invaders were outnumbered and lacked sufficient air support. Within two days, Cuban forces captured or killed the majority of the invaders. The failed invasion not only embarrassed the U.S. but also solidified Castro’s position, leading him to declare Cuba a socialist state and seek closer ties with the Soviet Union. This event significantly heightened Cold War tensions. (history.com)
