9. The Battle of Carrhae (53 BCE)
The Romans suffered a crushing defeat at Carrhae, losing thousands of troops and much of their Eastern prestige to the Parthians. Yet, Parthian instability in the years that followed allowed Rome to regroup and expand its influence across the region. Over time, Rome’s reach grew ever stronger, ultimately absorbing Parthian territory and legacy into its vast empire centuries later. The loss at Carrhae proved only a temporary setback in Rome’s long march toward dominance.
