10. The Yugoslav State Fragmentation (1991-1992)
The disintegration of Yugoslavia between 1991 and 1992 was driven by escalating ethnic tensions and nationalist fervor, leading to the violent breakup of the federation. Slovenia and Croatia declared independence in 1991, followed by Macedonia in 1992. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s declaration of independence in 1992 intensified the conflict, resulting in the Bosnian War. The fragmentation led to the emergence of multiple new nations and a series of civil wars that reshaped the Balkan region (persaudlab.jhu.edu).
