7. Operation Jaywick: Raiding the Heart of Singapore
In September 1943, a team of 14 Australian and British commandos embarked on Operation Jaywick, a daring raid against Japanese shipping in Singapore Harbour. Disguised as Malay fishermen, they sailed 4,000 miles from Exmouth, Australia, to Subar Island near Singapore in the captured Japanese vessel, the MV Krait. From there, six commandos paddled into the harbour in collapsible canoes, attaching limpet mines to Japanese ships. The operation resulted in the sinking or damaging of seven ships, totaling over 30,000 tonnes. Despite its success, Operation Jaywick is seldom featured outside Australia. Learn more.
