5. Notable Black Slaveowners
Among the most prominent Black slaveowners was William Ellison, a former enslaved person who became a prosperous cotton gin maker in South Carolina. Ellison eventually owned dozens of slaves, operating a large plantation and participating actively in the Southern economy.
