4. Liberia (Late 1980s-2003)
Liberia’s descent into civil war began in 1989 when Charles Taylor’s National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) initiated an uprising against President Samuel Doe’s government. The conflict, marked by widespread atrocities and the use of child soldiers, resulted in approximately 200,000 deaths and displaced over half the population. International intervention, including the deployment of the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), led to a ceasefire and the signing of the Accra Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2003, paving the way for reconstruction and recovery (britannica.com).
