14. Turkey’s Troubled Relations (2010s-present)
Turkey’s evolving foreign policy has raised concerns within NATO. The acquisition of the Russian S-400 missile system in 2019 led to U.S. sanctions and Turkey’s removal from the F-35 program (axios.com). Tensions with Greece over territorial disputes in the Aegean Sea have also strained alliance unity. In August 2022, Turkey accused Greece of “hostile action” after its S-300 missile system allegedly locked onto Turkish jets, a claim Greece denied. These developments have prompted ongoing discussions about mutual trust and cohesion within NATO.
