President Jefferson bought 827,000 square miles of territory from France in 1803 for $15 million. This acquisition doubled America’s size overnight. The land stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. Jefferson worried about the purchase’s constitutionality but recognized its strategic importance.
