Babies Receiving Sunlight Therapy
Sunlight therapy, also known as phototherapy, is a medical treatment commonly used to treat infants with jaundice. Jaundice is a condition characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes caused by an excess of bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced during the breakdown of red blood cells. Newborns are particularly susceptible to jaundice due to their immature liver function.
Babies receiving sunlight therapy involves exposing the infant’s skin to specific wavelengths of light, typically blue light or blue-green light, which helps to break down the bilirubin and facilitate its elimination from the body. As you can see from this photo, sunlight therapy has been happening for a very long time. But the method may have been a little bit different back then compared to now.
