Holding Up Babies Over the Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall, constructed by the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) in 1961, was a heavily fortified barrier that divided East and West Berlin during the Cold War. The primary purpose of the Berlin Wall was to prevent the mass exodus of East Germans to West Germany and West Berlin. It consisted of various obstacles, including walls, barbed wire, guard towers, and a “death strip” with mines and other deterrents.
The border guards were under strict orders to prevent any unauthorized crossings, and attempting to escape across the wall was extremely dangerous and often resulted in injury or death.
