3. The Mary Celeste
The Mary Celeste, an American merchant brigantine, was discovered adrift and deserted in the Atlantic Ocean on December 4, 1872. The ship was seaworthy, with its cargo intact and no signs of violence. The crew of the Dei Gratia, which found the Mary Celeste, reported the vessel’s condition to authorities, but no satisfactory explanation for the abandonment was ever found.
