Innovative Military Tactics
At Vimy Ridge, Canadian forces introduced groundbreaking military tactics that would revolutionize combat strategies of the First World War. Central among these was the “creeping barrage“, an artillery technique where shells advanced steadily just ahead of infantry troops, effectively shielding them from enemy fire and forcing defenders underground. This synchronized movement required precise timing and exceptional coordination between artillery and infantry units. Additionally, smaller groups known as “platoons” were empowered to operate independently, adapting swiftly to battlefield conditions rather than relying solely on centralized commands. These innovative approaches not only maximized battlefield efficiency but dramatically reduced casualties, setting new standards for warfare.
