Decades before India’s 1857 uprising, the Vellore Mutiny erupted as one of the earliest armed resistances against British rule.
Indian soldiers, angered by new regulations and cultural impositions, stormed the Vellore Fort, briefly seizing control before being violently suppressed. Though quickly crushed, the mutiny foreshadowed the larger rebellions to come and exposed deep-seated resentment towards colonial authority. Learn more at The Hindu.
