The Reconquista began after Muslim forces conquered Visigothic Spain. Christians slowly pushed back through battles like Covadonga in 722. The campaign lasted nearly eight centuries until Ferdinand and Isabella captured Granada in 1492. The Pope supported this long struggle as a religious obligation.
