Portuguese Colonization of Goa (1510)
Afonso de Albuquerque captured Goa from the Bijapur Sultanate in November 1510. The Portuguese established the notorious Goa Inquisition in 1560 to suppress non-Catholic faiths. They destroyed Hindu temples and forced mass conversions of local populations. Portuguese authorities built churches on temple sites to symbolize Christian dominance. The religious campaign supported Portugal’s control over the lucrative spice trade routes.
