Often cited as the first recorded major defeat of Sparta, the Battle of Hysiae saw Sparta lose to Argos during the Second Messenian War. Argos’ tactical innovations overwhelmed Sparta’s famously disciplined hoplites, proving that the Spartan phalanx was not invincible.
