Anna and Eugene were family friends to the Van Gogh family. They had heard a lot about Vincent’s paintings and felt that he had never seen the recognition they thought he should have. They knew that part of the reason for this was because Van Gogh didn’t do well in social settings. Therefore, the pair felt that one way to help Van Gogh gain confidence in his talent was to purchase The Red Vineyard painting at the art show.
