10. The Opium Wars and Unequal Treaties (1839-1860)
The Opium Wars (1839-1860) were pivotal conflicts between China and Western powers, primarily Britain, over the opium trade. The First Opium War (1839-1842) resulted in China’s defeat and the signing of the Treaty of Nanking, which ceded Hong Kong to Britain and opened several ports to foreign trade. The Second Opium War (1856-1860) further humiliated China, leading to additional concessions and the legalization of the opium trade. These “Unequal Treaties” exposed China’s vulnerabilities, spurred internal upheavals like the Taiping Rebellion, and ignited calls for modernization to strengthen the nation (history.com).
