6. Sukarno, Indonesia (1965-1967)
In 1965, the United States provided support and intelligence to Indonesian generals who ousted President Sukarno, fearing his leftist policies and ties to the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI). Following the coup, the Indonesian military, under General Suharto, initiated mass killings of suspected communists, resulting in an estimated 500,000 to one million deaths. Declassified U.S. documents reveal that American officials had detailed knowledge of the massacres and actively encouraged the military’s actions to eliminate the PKI and secure a pro-Western regime.
