10. Srebrenica Massacre (Bosnia, 1995)
In July 1995, over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were systematically executed by Bosnian Serb forces in Srebrenica, a UN-declared “safe area.” This mass killing was a flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions’ protections for prisoners and civilians. Despite the presence of international peacekeepers, meaningful intervention was absent, and the atrocity unfolded largely unchecked. The Srebrenica massacre stands as a painful symbol of international failure to uphold humanitarian law, prompting later war crimes prosecutions but little comfort for survivors.
