On August 6, 1945, during World War II, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The bomb, codenamed “Little Boy,” was dropped by the B-29 bomber Enola Gay at approximately 8:15 AM local time. The explosion resulted in the immediate deaths of an estimated 70,000 people, with tens of thousands more succumbing to injuries and radiation sickness in the following weeks.
