In February 1797, during the War of the First Coalition, a French force of approximately 1,400 soldiers, known as La Légion Noire, landed near Fishguard, Wales, aiming to incite a rebellion against British rule. The poorly supplied invaders faced immediate resistance from local militia and townsfolk, including women who donned traditional Welsh attire, creating the illusion of a larger British force.
