Norman Mailer, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, navigated a tumultuous personal life marked by violence.

Norman Mailer, born in 1923, was a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist known for works like ‘The Naked and the Dead’ and ‘The Executioner’s Song.’ However, his personal life was marked by violence. In 1960, during a drunken party, Mailer stabbed his second wife, Adele Morales, twice with a penknife, narrowly missing her heart. Morales survived and declined to press charges, leading to Mailer’s conviction on a reduced charge of third-degree assault. This incident has been a focal point for feminist critics of Mailer, who point to themes of sexual violence in his work. (The Guardian)
