11. Paul Gauguin
Paul Gauguin, born in 1848, was a French Post-Impressionist artist renowned for his vibrant paintings of Tahitian life. However, his personal life was marked by troubling behavior. In 1891, he abandoned his wife and five children in France to seek a “primitive paradise” in Tahiti. There, he engaged in relationships with young Tahitian girls, some as young as 13, whom he referred to as his “wives.” Gauguin’s actions have led to ongoing debates about the separation of art from artist.
