9. Project MKOFTEN: Occult Investigations
Project MKOFTEN was a covert U.S. Department of Defense program developed in conjunction with the CIA in the late 1960s. A partner of MKULTRA, its goal was to “test the behavioral and toxicological effects of certain drugs on animals and humans.” Testing occurred on animals, prisoners at Holmesburg Prison in Philadelphia, and military personnel at Edgewood Arsenal. Beyond drug testing, MKOFTEN delved into the realm of the supernatural, exploring the potential of occult practices for intelligence purposes. The program investigated the effects of black magic, voodoo, demonology, and other esoteric practices on human behavior.
