5. The Salem, Iowa Community
The Quaker settlers in Salem, Iowa, established one of the most organized Underground Railroad cells in the Midwest. With hidden rooms and complex signals, they defied both law and threat, helping hundreds journey safely to Illinois and beyond. A prominent member of the abolitionists was Henderson Lewelling.
