4. The Pepsi-Coke Space Race
In 1985, during the height of the Cola Wars, both Coca-Cola and Pepsi developed special cans to dispense their beverages in microgravity. These cans were tested aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on mission STS-51-F. However, astronauts found the drinks unappealing due to the lack of refrigeration and the challenges of carbonation in weightlessness. The experiment concluded that carbonated beverages were not suitable for space travel. For more details, refer to the Smithsonian’s article on the Cola Wars in Space: (smithsonianmag.com)
