5. The British Invasion of the Falklands (1982)
In April 1982, Argentina’s military junta, led by General Leopoldo Galtieri, initiated Operation Rosario, swiftly occupying the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic. This move aimed to bolster nationalistic sentiment amid domestic unrest. In response, the United Kingdom, under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, assembled a naval task force to reclaim the islands. After intense naval and air engagements, British forces landed on East Falkland on May 21. The conflict culminated in the Argentine surrender on June 14, 1982, reaffirming British sovereignty over the islands. The war resulted in 649 Argentine and 255 British military fatalities.
