20. The Australian Emu War
In one of the most bizarre military campaigns in history, Australia’s government declared war on emus in 1932 after flocks ravaged wheat crops. Soldiers armed with machine guns were sent to battle the giant birds across the Western Australian outback. Incredibly, the emus evaded defeat, outmaneuvering the military and rendering the operation a farcical failure. The “Emu War” remains a legendary—and humbling—chapter in the annals of governmental misadventure.
