Tombstone, Arizona, was founded in 1877 by prospector Ed Schieffelin, who discovered silver in the area despite warnings that he would find only his “tombstone.” The town rapidly grew into a bustling silver boomtown, attracting miners, gamblers, and outlaws. Its lawless reputation was solidified by the infamous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral in 1881.
