Guthrie, Oklahoma, sprang up in a single day during the 1889 Oklahoma Land Run, transforming from open prairie to a bustling city overnight. The Gold Rush mentality hit as people raced for plots (historycentral.com). Later, it was the first state capital, and much of its marvelous brick architecture remains.
