4. Access to Drugs
During their time in Vietnam, many soldiers encountered an abundance of drugs, which became a coping mechanism amidst the stress and trauma of war. Easy access to substances like marijuana and heroin allowed some to temporarily escape the harsh realities of their environment. This availability and use of drugs contributed significantly to addictive behaviors, providing a chemical form of solace that was difficult to resist.
