24. First Latin American Nobel Peace Prize
In 1936, Carlos Saavedra Lamas became the first person to receive the Latin American Nobel Peace Prize. He won the prize for his work in ending the Chaco War by creating a state of peace between Paraguay and Bolivia. Once Lamas passed on, the medal became lost.
Years later, an American collector heard that a pawn shop had Lamas’ Peace Prize for sale. He went to the shop and bought the item for the worth the price in gold or $9,000. The prize weighs 222.4 grams and is a 23-karat medal.
