At the heart of Hue stood its iconic citadel, a massive walled complex and symbol of Vietnam’s imperial past.
North Vietnamese forces transformed this UNESCO World Heritage site into a stronghold, resisting repeated assaults by U.S. Marines and South Vietnamese troops.
The fighting was fierce and unrelenting, leaving the citadel scarred and much of its historic architecture in ruins.
