The Antikythera mechanism is one of the most significant artifacts ever discovered from the ancient world, as it has revolutionized modern understanding of ancient science and technology. At first glance, the corroded bronze fragments appeared unremarkable. Over time, however, they revealed a story that upended previous assumptions about the capabilities of ancient civilizations.

The artifact’s construction has been variously dated to 87 BC, sometime between 150 to 100 BC, and 205 BC. Whatever the exact date, the device represents a pinnacle of ancient Greek engineering and scientific knowledge. The historical context of the Antikythera mechanism is essential to understanding its significance. As seen below, in the Hellenistic period that followed the conquests of Alexander the Great, Greek science, philosophy, and engineering reached a high level of sophistication.
