10. Understanding the Function of an Ancient Prized Possession

The Antikythera mechanism must have been a prized possession, possibly commissioned by a wealthy individual or intended as a gift for an elite recipient. Modern research into the device has involved a multidisciplinary approach that combines archaeology, history, astronomy, and advanced imaging technologies. X-ray computed tomography and 3D scans have revealed the device’s internal structure, and deciphered inscriptions on its surfaces.

Those inscriptions – over 3,000 characters of explanatory text – amount to an ancient user’s manual. They helped researchers reconstruct the mechanism’s functions and intended use. The collaborative efforts of scientists and historians have led to a deeper appreciation of the mechanism’s place in the history of science and technology. Each component of the Antikythera mechanism has been intensely studied.
