4. The Battle of Little Bighorn (1876)
In 1876, during the Great Sioux War, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer led the 7th Cavalry Regiment against a coalition of Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors near the Little Bighorn River in Montana. Underestimating the strength and resolve of the Native American forces, Custer’s troops were overwhelmed and annihilated, resulting in his death and that of 267 soldiers.
