2. Spartan Women: More Than Meets the Eye
In stark contrast to their counterparts in other Greek city-states, Spartan women enjoyed a unique status with more freedom and responsibilities. Unlike the secluded lives of Athenian women, Spartan women were educated, physically trained, and could own and inherit property. They played a critical role in managing households and estates, especially when men were away at war. This degree of autonomy was not a sign of gender equality, but rather a reflection of Sparta’s militaristic focus, which required a strong support system. Indeed, Spartan women were pivotal in sustaining the city’s martial ethos.
