1. The Myth of Spartan Equality
The notion of equality in Spartan society is more myth than reality. While Sparta is often idealized as a place where all citizens shared equal status, the truth is that it was a society deeply divided by class.
At the top were the Spartiates, full citizens who enjoyed privileges and power. Below them were the Perioeci, free but non-citizen inhabitants who handled trade and craftsmanship. At the bottom were the Helots, state-owned serfs who labored under harsh conditions. This rigid hierarchy was a far cry from the egalitarian utopia often depicted in popular culture.
