New York bar owners in the 1890s outsmarted the Raines Law, which banned Sunday alcohol sales except in hotels serving food. They placed a single sandwich on each table, telling customers not to eat it. The same sandwich got reused all day, technically fulfilling the food service requirement. Patrons enjoyed their drinks while the lonely sandwich made its rounds.
