In 1928, industrialist Henry Ford established Fordlândia, a model city carved out of the Amazon rainforest, hoping to secure a steady rubber supply for his automobile empire. The ambitious plan soon unraveled due to rampant disease, harsh conditions, and cultural clashes with local workers. Despite Ford’s vision for a utopian community, the project failed, and Fordlândia was abandoned in the 1940s. Today, its decaying structures serve as a symbol of industrial overreach and the unpredictability of speculative ventures.
