6. Transition to Democratic Governance
By the late 1980s, mounting public pressure forced South Korea’s leaders to embrace democratic reforms. The adoption of direct presidential elections in 1987 marked a decisive break from authoritarianism, granting citizens new political freedoms. Unlike some Asian neighbors, Korea’s transition was remarkably swift and largely peaceful. This period solidified civil liberties and set a new standard for participatory governance in the region.
