17. Rebuilding Lives After the War
Returning home did not end the struggle for Civil War veterans. Many bore physical wounds and disabilities that made work and daily life difficult. Psychological trauma lingered, often unrecognized and untreated, compounding their challenges. Some found their homes destroyed or faced communities that were indifferent or hostile, forcing them to rebuild from nothing.
