9. The Sarcophagus: Containing the Beast
To halt further radiation leaks, workers quickly erected a massive concrete sarcophagus around the ruined reactor. This structure, built under extreme conditions, was a desperate but necessary measure. Over time, cracks and structural weaknesses appeared, leading to the creation of the New Safe Confinement—a larger, more advanced steel shelter installed in 2016. These engineering feats remain essential to keeping radioactive threats at bay.
