Established in 1908 by Colonel Allen Allensworth, this pioneering California town was envisioned as a self-sufficient Black community. Residents built essential institutions—schools, a library, and thriving businesses—with hopes of creating a true utopia in the West. Though challenges emerged over time, Allensworth’s legacy lives on. Today, it is preserved as a California State Historic Park, where visitors can learn about Black achievement and ambition in the region.
