Competition with Native Species
The presence of Escobar’s hippos has introduced new competition for resources among native Colombian species. Hippos consume vast quantities of vegetation and displace other herbivores, altering the food web dynamics. Local fauna, such as capybaras and manatees, face increased pressure as they vie for diminished resources in shared habitats. Additionally, hippos’ territorial behavior can be aggressive, disrupting both aquatic and terrestrial animals. This competition exacerbates the challenges faced by endemic species, some of which are already threatened by habitat loss and human activities. The hippos’ unexpected dominance continues to alter Colombia’s natural landscapes.
