7. Fenian Raids: Irish Revolutionaries Attack Canada

Fresh from Civil War battlefields, thousands of Irish-American veterans invaded British North America between 1866 and 1871. These “Fenian Brotherhood” fighters had an improbable plan. They wanted to capture Canadian territory to trade for Irish independence from Britain. They conducted several deadly raids, defeating Canadian militia at Ridgeway before U.S. forces intervened. Over two dozen people died in these attacks.
